brilliant lightshow in the skies of canada

On Thursday night a huge meteor lit up the night air over Edmonton, Canada. Fortunately, a car with a mounted video camera happened to be driving right towards the impromptu phenomenon and got some great footage of the event. What are the odds of that?

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (AP) — Scientists say they hope to find remnants of a meteor that brilliantly lit up the sky before falling to earth in western Canada.

University of Calgary planetary scientist Alan Hildebrand called it one of the largest meteors visible in the country in the last decade.

Widely broadcast video images showed what appeared to be a speeding fireball Thursday night over Saskatoon that became larger and brighter before disappearing as it neared the ground.

Hildebrand said Friday that he received about 300 email reports from witnesses.

jimi hendrix live painting by denny dent

A few years back I remember seeing an intense painting of Hendrix hanging in a friend’s apartment. I found out later it was painted live to a music track by the guitarist at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. I’m really amazed by the energy that Denny Dent puts has brush strokes as much [...]

stone age temple at gobelki tepe in turkey

One of the T-shaped monoliths in Gobelki Tepe, this one bearing a relief of a fox.

It’s more than twice as old as the Pyramids, or even the written word. When it was built, saber-toothed tigers and woolly mammoths still roamed, and the Ice Age had just ended.

The elaborate temple at Gobelki Tepe in southeastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, is staggeringly ancient: 11,500 years old, from a time just before humans learned to farm grains and domesticate animals.

According to the German archaeologist in charge of excavations at the site, it might be the birthplace of agriculture, of organized religion — of civilization itself.

“This is the first human-built holy place,” Klaus Schmidt of the German Archaeological Institute says in the November issue of Smithsonian magazine.

Schmidt and his colleagues say no evidence of permanent settlement has been found at the site, although there are remains of butchered animals and edible plants.

However, all of the bones are from wild animals, and all the vegetation from wild plants. That means the massive structure was built by a hunter-gatherer society, not a settled agricultural one.

kitty kungfu

Who can get enough of cat headed bipeds performing in a dance of death? I am pleased in how disproportionally large, yet functional the cat heads are on the bodies they operate. One can only hold in baited breath for the further adventures of this lone warrior against the armies of the corrupt feline.

it’s cold outside, time to inflate the tires

We got a little concerned this weekend when the check engine light was flashing on the car’s dashboard.  With the recent drop in temperature, I had an idea of what was probably causing it.

Cold weather air contracts and brings the PSI down.  Most standard-size car tires maximum PSI is around 44.  You [...]

strange glowing aurora over saturn

Staring at the below picture reminds me of the cauldrons and alchemy of past civilizations. It’s interesting that several other planets in the solar system share the same phenomenon as our own northern lights. That’s something that I would like to see with my own eyes someday.

A stunning light display over Saturn has stumped scientists who say it behaves unlike any other planetary aurora known in our solar system.

The blueish-green glow was found over the ringed planet’s north polar region just like Earth’s northern lights.

It was discovered by the infrared instruments on NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.

‘We’ve never seen an aurora like this elsewhere,’ said Tom Stallard, a scientist working with Cassini data at the University of Leicester.

‘This aurora covers an enormous area across the pole. Our current ideas on what forms Saturn’s aurora predict that this region should be empty, so finding such a bright aurora here is a fantastic surprise.’

Auroras are caused by charged particles streaming along the magnetic field lines of a planet into its atmosphere.

ancient art of falconry

I was rummaging through old work in storage and found some entertaining drawings from 4th grade: warriors with mechanical birds perched on their shoulders to aid in battle.  I wasn’t sure where the idea came from then, but now know that its origins started in Falconry. There are even places allow you to witness [...]

voting after a day’s work

After putting in a day’s work, I headed off to vote.  If you haven’t done it yet, make sure to get out to your local precinct and caste your ballot.

Not too long ago my friend Joe sent this funny video to myself and others relating to the election.  Hahaha.  I was tricked at [...]
