the average age of civilizations

I think I can speak the mind of most people tied into the world economy and say things are a bit on edge right now.  As I wrote about earlier, most of this debacle was heralded by the situation with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  This maelstrom, however, has been brewing for years.

katherine mcalpine and the large hadron rap

The progress of the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest particle accelerator, has been an interesting one.  An air of cautious and excited attitudes have followed the project as it’s evolved through phases of development.  There’s been some controversy surrounding the construction of the device, and with a recent breach of helium containment, it [...]

hot air balloon launch

I’ve never seen hot air balloons launch in real life before.  I guess it’s because I’m not an early rise person.  I’m glad I went against my nature to see them take off yesterday morning at 6:30am from a mist covered field.

My favorite balloon of the entire show was the dragon one.  The happy dragon made me think of the characters on cereal boxes that encourage you to buy their product.

Look at that tree on the left with the toucan on it.  I have no idea how you would even go about sewing a balloon shape that complex. Impressive.

We sat and watched most of the show from this hillside.  There was still a lot of dew on the ground and my pants got soaked.  It was worth it.  The morning air reminded me of getting up early for summer camp in 5th grade.

dog whisperer 100th episode this friday

There are only a handful of TV shows that I can watch for a while, and continue watching. I would have to put Cesar Millan’s show Dog Whisperer at the top of that list. It’s awesome. That guy really knows how animals think, from the inside out. What is clear to anyone watching is [...]

moving from 32 to 64 bit os

I’ve run into a wall recently, and it’s 32 bit. The setup I currently have is good enough for most everything else (low to mid-stress games, artwork, etc), but 1080p HD playback and editing required a re-think to what hardware I was running everything on.  I  never upgrade hardware unless it limits my software’s [...]

fannie mae and freddie mac on charlie rose

What is one of the largest pinch-points of the current economy in the United States? Mortgage loans and the housing bubble, of course. This is only one corner of the multi-faceted tower that comprises the country’s stability as a whole, and its syncopation into the world system. The government acquisition of the lending giants [...]

no sunspots for first time in 100 years

One thing that is brought to the forefront by this event is the significance of the sun’s effect on our solar system, and the abnormal stall of an 11 year cycle.  It is also noted that there is a constant fluctuation between warming and cooling cycles of the sun, which in turn contribute to the rise and fall of  temperatures (mini ice ages) on this planet in the past.

The record-setting surface of the sun. A full month has gone by without a single spot (Source: Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO))

The sun has reached a milestone not seen for nearly 100 years: an entire month has passed without a single visible sunspot being noted.

The event is significant as many climatologists now believe solar magnetic activity – which determines the number of sunspots — is an influencing factor for climate on earth.

According to data from Mount Wilson Observatory, UCLA, more than an entire month has passed without a spot. The last time such an event occurred was June of 1913. Sunspot data has been collected since 1749.

When the sun is active, it’s not uncommon to see sunspot numbers of 100 or more in a single month. Every 11 years, activity slows, and numbers briefly drop to near-zero. Normally sunspots return very quickly, as a new cycle begins.

But this year — which corresponds to the start of Solar Cycle 24 — has been extraordinarily long and quiet, with the first seven months averaging a sunspot number of only 3. August followed with none at all. The astonishing rapid drop of the past year has defied predictions, and caught nearly all astronomers by surprise.

megaman 9 reboots classic gameplay and graphics

You will probably do a double-take after watching the trailer below, thinking it’s an old game for the NES. It tricked me too. This is going to be the new Megaman 9 game released by Capcom! They got back to the basics, and even put in the screen flicker that was a staple with [...]

the disclosure project

When it comes to information that is out of my skill set, I enjoy hearing lectures by experts in those particular fields. What if hundreds of them were officially documented to being witness to unexplainable and curious events?

Science logically accounts for roughly 1% of the known universe, and we have explored less than 1% of our own ocean floors. What mysteries exist in remaining 99% of physical reality remain to be determined..or discovered.
