hide favicons on firefox toolbar with userchrome.css

I like favicons.
I really do, but something was happening with them.
They were burning into my computer screen. Even though we all have screen savers to stop this from happening, there is no doubt that all the hours spent on a web browser will trump the ability of screen saver to prevent odd divots and burn-in from appearing, especially if the emoticon is a bright color. Like my awesome link to 1UP. That’s a bright blue favicon that was starting to ghost like crazy when I loaded up other applications for work. Just the text please.

After upgrading my firefox from 3.5 to 3.6.2, I noticed that my old plugins and themes that supported favicon disable either didn’t work, or did work for some time and then disabled themselves. Weird.

So what’s a solution, free of additional plugins or themes, only some simple coding?
userChrome.css

It has many uses, but were using it for just this specific purpose now.

First, you have to go to your profile directory for firefox. Below is a list of each one and where they are located on different operating systems.

time to see some dinosaurs, arena style

There’s a science museum close that the wife and I have had the pleasure of visiting several times. We are both geeks and love going to these places. That’s why it was totally awesome to hear about this world touring BBC dinosaur show, “Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular“, that was going to be stopping nearby on their events newsletter!

After a little bit of research online, a miles-long list of favorable critiques and praise were clearly evident. It is going to be next weekend so if I can get any video or pictures I’ll definitely take some and post them up on a future entry.

The actual walking T-Rex from the show! He appears to be hungry.

Walking with Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular, is a live adaptation of the series that originated in Australia in January 2007, and toured North America in 2007, 2008 and 2009; it currently travels through Europe until 2010 and is scheduled through to 2011 returning to North America. An asian tour is being scheduled.

Artistic Director William May developed the creative vision of the show based on an original idea by entrepreneur Bruce Mactaggart to create an arena version of the Walking with Dinosaurs television series. The show features animatronic and costumed dinosaurs. and are narrated by an on set paleontologist (actor) named Huxley.

The show is directed by Scott Faris, a Broadway veteran. The creatures are designed and built by Sonny Tilders; the set and projected image design are by Peter England; the show’s lighting is by John Rayment, the score is composed by James Brett; Warner Brown wrote the script. Tim Haines, producer of the original BBC series serves as project consultant.

swine flu: the biting pig bites back

What it was, I’m not entirely sure, but starting about two weeks ago I heard some horrid coughs at work. “Holy crap..”, I thought. “Someone is hacking up a black lung in the other room.” By that evening I had light coughs, but I still thought nothing of it. By the next morning I felt like an entire train filled a with shipment of coal had hit me in the face. I was literally well one second, and sick the next.

Going to work at the studio the following morning was, at best, a humorous attempt to transfer sleep mode to a desk while holding a wacom pencil. No dice…. and so began my first steps towards days of cellular warfare…. and my wife’s valiant attempt to get me healthy whilst staying away from airborne abnormalities of every kind. She was doing okay, then got worse than me with a fever of 104 degrees. :(

I am happy to report that after all the coughing and symptoms for nearly two weeks, we both feel sort of normal again. This was by far the worst case of flu I’ve ever gotten in my life.

It was like some mutant super-virus or something.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, about half the people I work with got sick, and one of the guys at work was diagnosed with having swine flu.

Woohoo. Well at least I stumbled and bumbled through it to tell the tale.

Swine flu, you loose.

version 8 up and running, and burning robot breakers

For a while now I’ve been meaning to do a whole revision on the website. This will be the 8th major version. After getting back from the studio on friday, I had a quick dinner, then proceeded to put a good night’s work into getting it done. By 5am on Saturday I was at a point of having version 8 to a form that I was happy with, and more importantly ready to get some sleep.

It was at about this time all the power goes out in the homestead. For the past two or three weeks we’ve been getting temperatures up over 100 degrees, so I figured it was just an overload on the grid setting off breakers. I quickly ran downstairs, switched the main breaker back on, and got back into the office to work.

Twenty minutes later. Blackout. Woohoo. I happens again.

Only this time when I go to the breaker box it smells like burning robots. Stupendous…and you know on a holiday weekend at 6 in the morning electricians everywhere are open for business. So the weekend work is now correspondence and living from a hotel room.

Oh well, at least I was able to get the new website up and didn’t lose my work……and that, is why saving often is important. For you know not when your main power supply may spontaneously burn into a globular pile of copper and rubber.

chocolate milk

promised land chocolate milkThis is very tasty, and is the fullest flavored milk I’ve had in a while.

I’ve lived in different parts of the country and never saw the brand before, so I assume it’s probably a local one from local farms, hence the awesome taste. The natural stuff tastes more like the food I remember eating as a child.

If I can buy some food products that circulate money into the surrounding agricultural business I try to. I grew up around farms and have a respect for people who put hard work and hours into the craft.

Drinking from cows of the Promised Land reminds me when our family used to have a milkman who brought milk in glass bottles and left them at our front porch.

That was some good milk too. Hooray for milk.

godzilla 2000: filled with emotion and wonder

I’m a big fan of all the Godzilla flicks, so today the Mrs. and I thought it would be….wait, let me rephrase that. “I” thought it would be fun to finally watch the glory that is Godzilla 2000.

Just be happy you weren't around after the spicy meal....

The included party were quickly converted from doubting to disciple as the powerful drama unlatched itself along a humorously dubbed timeline.

I was quite satisfied with movie, which delivers on the familiar formula of humanity’s love/hate relationship with the radioactive-faced beast.

Something I still don’t get is how he is always attacked by those missiles early on in the plot, waving and bellowing to the heavens above. It seems that our species has a hard time grasping the numerous examples of Godzilla’s dispersing of aliens, mech doppelgangers, and other mutated monstrosities alike.

Thank you Godzilla…I remember, unlike those fools who barrage you with the latest in ballistics technology every other storyline.

The most exciting element of the viewing experience can be credited to Mrs. Jiovis, who broke down in tears during the climactic end battle between Godzilla and final boss. As we all know Godzilla must first sustain heavy attack before summoning shear willpower to overcome and win.

Without spoiling anything at all, I will be general:

The emotional moment crested as Godzilla was struck upon multiple times by an ultra combo attack which ended with a building collapsing on his rubbery cranium.

The cries made their way quickly to occupy the room surrounding my ear ducts.

“Waaaaaahhhhhh!! *sniff* *sniff*…..Godzillaaaaaaa!”

I responded quickly with assurance.

“Don’t worry Jiovis, Godzilla is going to win.  Count on it.”

…and win he did….but you’ll have to see the movie for yourself to enjoy the crescendo of the experience.

two headed turtle

Never have I seen a creature like this in real life, so the experience was an interesting one. I remember back in grade school going to a museum in Canada near the Niagara Falls to be greeted by a whole floor full of mutated animals.  It wasn’t Ripley’s either, ironically.  The menagerie of creatures were bizarre and strange, yet drew me in to stare for a long time.

I’ve always wondered what it would be like having the orientation of the sensory glands on the face shifted around. Or what about sharing another head? How much of the body do you feel, and how much does the other feel?

happy new years from cyborg hotdog dog

Happy 2009 everyone. We went to visit family this year and had a great time. We’re off to see a parade here in a couple of hours, so for now I only have pictures of the hotdog dog, a highly interesting species of animal.  The creature was spotted by Jiovis and her camera at a family friend’s house.

Hmmm…nice eyes. Where did he get them from?

uploading / formatting / embedding youtube in hd

YouTube recently announced on their blog the ability to stream HD video, so I decided to find out what the recommended requirements were straight off the Help Center.  This past summer I picked up the Canon Vixia HF100 and was waiting for them upgrade to get some of my clips online in a resolution closer to original.  A few other streaming video services were on this earlier and they are good, but  none have a userbase that rivals in size.  For that reason, this was great to finally hear.

As per the requirements listed on the Help Center, they are quite easy to meet or format to meet.  If your videos are already 1920 x 1080, there is no need to scale down the dimensions to 1290 x 720. What usually ends up happening is annoying pixelation around edges and within volumes of faster moving objects.  Refrain from resizing, and you won’t run into the issue.

Here’s a video I took this past summer of Meerkats hanging out in HD.  Make sure to check it out in fullscreen mode.  You can read a short tutorial on how in embed YouTube HD videos here.  Some other sites offer a slightly different embed code, but the referred website shows how to minimally tweak the original code generated on each video page. Better to tweak than reinvent the wheel.

*update* youtube now auto-embeds a link off the toolbar for the hd version of videos if they are available in that format. You can continue to use the above tutorial if you want, however.

Here’s the format specs I used when processing my video.
I was even successful in directly uploading .m2ts files, if you are wondering whether that format is feasible also.

codec: mpeg-2
resolution: 1920×1080
frame rate: 29.97
variable bit rate: 4000-8300 kbps
video compression data bitrate: 8000 kbps
audio compression data bitrate: 320 kbps

cooking mama

Probably not too smart of a move, but I’ve been cooking virtual food on the DS before bed for the past few days.  The sound effects and graphics are good, so that makes a human tummy growl.  Cooking Mama claps her hands and gets starry eyed when you do an exceptional job.

If it weren’t for such a high-flying feeling of satisfaction, my fortitude would withstand the urge of making…one…more…delicious…meal…

it’s cold outside, time to inflate the tires

We got a little concerned this weekend when the check engine light was flashing on the car’s dashboard.  With the recent drop in temperature, I had an idea of what was probably causing it.

Cold weather air contracts and brings the PSI down.  Most standard-size car tires maximum PSI is around 44.  You can find your car’s maximum PSI by reading the information on the side of the tire.  I try to inflate my own tires to around 35 PSI.  It’s also a good idea to check your tire air pressure every month.  Uneven, low, or overinflated tires cause inconsistent tread wear and can have a heavy impact on the mileage of your vehicle.  Right now some of us are getting a slight break with the price per barrel of oil, but it’s a good habit to get into when prices start rising again.  Any bit of conscious decisions-making is fruitful in the long run.

As expected, a quick trip to the the gas station and some air fixed the issue.  Most newer model cars have a sensor that detects tire pressure and will give you the standard check engine light if they get low.  The unfortunate thing is wondering whether that light was on because of the tires or something more serious.  If indeed the issue was caused by underinflated tires, your check engine light should go off immediatley, as opposed to a more serious problem with your engine or a loose gas cap.

voting after a day’s work

After putting in a day’s work, I headed off to vote.  If you haven’t done it yet, make sure to get out to your local precinct and caste your ballot.

Not too long ago my friend Joe sent this funny video to myself and others relating to the election.  Hahaha.  I was tricked at first and wondered why the world hated me so much.  I’m happy to report that as of 2 hours ago, there won’t be any elderly ladies expressing my lack of responsibility in colorful, profane, language.

Man, that would suck if I did sleep in and forget to vote.
