N.A.S.A. spacious thoughts (feat. tom waits & kool keith)

So dope. Probably one of the weirdest projects I’ve seen Tom Waits involved with also. I never thought he’d team up with Dr. Octagon.

up: the motley crew of carl, russell, dug, and kevin

Carl Fredricksen, an elderly man with a floating house traverses through an undiscovered world of flora and fauna, accompanied by a young asian cubscout, a technologically enhanced golden retriever, and exotically strange bird….and, it’s completely acceptable because of solid personality and character development.

carl russell dug and kevin

I just saw UP with my wife over the weekend. This has got to be one of my favorite Pixar stories, and they’ve already set the bar pretty high with all the other films. What always blows my mind about these guys is the surgical care they take to every iota of the what happens, and how it weaves into the overall theme that’s being communicated. Being a guy who’s married to a supportive, funny, and weird wife also helped me appreciate it in ways that weren’t revealed in any of the movie trailers.

I loved all the characters, but found myself cheering the most for Carl throughout the film.  He has this complicated yet simple personality arc, from childhood into the present day that is just….constructed so well!

I can’t say enough good things about this movie. Just go see it. :)
Oh, and if you have any grandparents or older folks you’re close too, take them to see it also.

pain without borders

The concept is direct and communicated in a creative way.
The animation speaks for itself very well.

Paris VFX and 3D animation studio Space Patrol handled the production of this 3D clip for French NGO Pain without Borders/ Douleurs sans frontières with the goal of increasing public awareness to pain in its various forms and drive enough online signatures to enable the French government to present a resolution at the U.N. Agency: TBWA MAP, directors: Philippe Gamer, Fred Remuzat.

conjunction junction, what’s your function

First Aired: 1973
Lyrics & Music: Bob Dorough
Performed by: Jack Sheldon
Designed by: Tom Yohe and Bill Peckmann
Animation by: Phil Kimmelman and Associates
Fun Fact: Conjunction Junction was recorded on the same day as I’m Just a Bill, with the same band. Jazz singer Terry Morel sings the chorus.

Lyrics:

Conjunction Junction, what’s your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, how’s that function?
I’ve got three favorite cars that get most of my job done.
Conjunction Junction, what’s their function?
I’ve got and, but, and or.
They’ll get you pretty far.

And!
That’s an additive, like this and that.
But!
That’s sort of the opposite,
not this but that.
And then there’s Or. O-R,
when you have a choice like this or that
And, but, and or get you pretty far!

spiderman calling batman

Hahahaha. I found this my friend Alex’s blog. This is so weird and quirky. I could imagine a whole series of animated shorts done in this style. I hope to see more of these in the future.

kung fu panda dream sequence animation

This is one movie that I’ve been very excited to see since glancing at the maquettes last year at comicon. The character designs and poses were so dynamic! I am a kung fu classics movie junkie, so I was hoping they’d do some kind of justice or homage to the genre. After seeing the movie I was entertained and satisfied, especially with the central message of the story.

What really amazed me was 2-d animated opening to the film. It was so over the top! Hahaha. Very nice. Here’s a few stills from the dream sequence. Great composition and colors.

pearl jam: do the evolution

What a great video that poses interesting questions that are relevant to our times and the cyclical nature of civilization. History doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme.

When speaking about the song, Eddie Vedder stated, “That song is all about someone who’s drunk with technology, who thinks they’re the controlling living being on this planet. It’s another one I’m not singing as myself.

Pearl Jam has stated that the novel Ishmael influenced the writing of Yield (the album), and according to the novel’s writer, Daniel Quinn, this song comes the closest to expressing the ideas of the book

toot, whistle, plunk, and boom

Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom is an educational Adventures in Music animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions, and originally released to theaters by Disney’s Buena Vista Distribution on November 10, 1953. A sequel to the first Adventures in Music cartoon, the 3-D short Melody, Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom is a stylized presentation of the evolution of four musical instruments over the ages: the horn (“toot”), the flute (“whistle”), the guitar (“plunk”), and the drum (“boom”).

The first animated cartoon to be filmed and released in widescreen CinemaScope, Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom won the 1954 Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). In 1994, it was voted #29 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field.
